A clock can be a 24/7 style statement—a way to give a room instant personality and practicality, too. Turn your timepiece into a conversation piece with any of these hands-on projects, which reinvent a skateboard, globes, maps or a kaleidoscope of boxes as witty works of functional wall art. You’ll need just a few basic tools: a drill, a craft knife and picture hangers, plus a DIY clockworks kit, available at almost any crafts store (the kits come in all sizes and styles; check the woodworking section).

This funky Globe Clock is sure to wow when understatement just won’t do. Cut six desktop globes in half, bind the edges with bookbinder’s tape and hang them floor-to-ceiling around an oversized clock kit spray-painted sea blue. Paint the wall a sunny yellow and watch the world tick by. Click here for complete how-to instructions

Time flies, especially when it’s kept on a skateboard. Crafting this Cool Clock is as swift as flipping over an arty skateboard and threading the clock shaft through a hole drilled between the wheels. Screw picture wire to the back and hang on a hook for a fun touch in any room. Click here for complete how-to instructions

A retro Starburst Clock gets a mod makeover. Punch six holes around the edge of a round papier-mâché box and connect six smaller boxes to it with 1/4-inch wooden dowels. Paint the boxes and clock hands Pop Art colors, then punch the shaft through the center box top and hide the battery inside. Click here for complete how-to instructions

A quartet of black-framed maps is a colorful commentary on the Time Zone Clocks found in newsrooms from New York to Paris. Use spray adhesive to mount subway maps from different countries on foam-core backs cut to fit store-bought frames. Accent each map with clockworks spray-painted red.
